DIY Custom Cutting Board
The Idea —
Mother’s Day is right around the corner, and if you’re looking for a gift that’s genuinely meaningful (not another candle or robe) this one is it! We’re talking about a wood-burned cutting board personalized with your child’s actual handwriting. It’s the kind of gift that doesn’t get stuffed in a drawer. It gets displayed on the counter, shown to every visitor, and kept forever. The shaky “I love you” is irreplaceable!
I promise it’s easier than it sounds. Here’s exactly how to do it.
Supplies:
pencil
ribbon and dried florals for gifiting
How To:
Have your child write their message write on the board with a pencil. Keep it simple. “Mom,” “I love you,” their name. The messier and more them, the better. Don’t correct it. Don’t re-do it. That imperfection is the whole point!
Tip: If you have multiple kids, have each one write in a different area of the board. It becomes a time capsule.
Heat up your wood burning tool (I set mine to medium/high heat), let it fully warm up (about 5 minutes), and slowly trace over your penciled letters. You can add a border if you’d like.
A few tips for beginners:
• Go slow. The slower you move, the darker and more defined the lines.
• Use light pressure. You don’t need to press hard.
• Practice on scrap wood first if it’s your first time. Even 5 minutes of practice makes a huge difference.
Once the burning is complete and the board has cooled, you can optionally apply a light coat of food-safe mineral oil to condition the wood and make the burned design pop.
Wrap with a bow and you’re all done! A beautiful home made gift! You can even pair this gift with a nice olive oil or a set of cheese knives.
